If I'm Found by Terri Blackstock

I am a huge fan of Christian Suspense novels and last year I chose a book off my Kindle to read and completed it in less than a day. That book was Terri Blackstock's book, If I Run, (read my review here). which was the first book in her "If I Run" series. Needless to say, I was hooked. Not just on the series but on Ms. Blackstock's writing. 

ABOUT THE BOOK:

MY REVIEW:

While you could read this book without reading the first book in the series, If I Run, I wouldn't advise it as the this book is a continuation of the first book, and because the first book was so good you really must read it first.

From the first sentence, "The police lights in my rearview mirror almost destroy me." to the very last I was catapulted into a fast paced, sit on the edge of your seat, good guys versus bad guys pursuit that literally left me breathless. Had I had the time I would have read it in one sitting as it was one of those books you just don't want to put down.

Casey is the heroine of the series that has been wrongfully accused of the murder of her friend. She seems to stay just one step ahead of the real killers while trying to gather evidence that will not only clear her name but put the killers behind bars. Enter, Dylan, while he has been hired to find her, he has realized she is innocent and is now using his job to find her as a way to help clear her of everything she has been accused of doing.

In the first book, Ms. Blackstock gave us a sub-plot that was full of danger and helped create more mystery into the story line. Don't worry, in If I Run, she has added another sub-plot that takes the reader into a different direction allowing the reader to see even deeper into Casey's heart. 

I loved the Christian thread that was woven into the story as well because it let the reader see that there is hope even in your darkest of hours. 

As mentioned before, you will want to read the first book in the series as this is a continuation series. In fact, the reader is left hanging as far as the major plotline. However, the subplot is tied up quite nicely and the relationship between Casey and Dylan, well, lets just say, I was happy with the way they left things...for now anyway. I can hardly wait for book three, If I Live, which releases in March 2018.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense novel. It is fast paced and heart pounding and well worth your time between the pages.

If I Run by Terri Blackstock

Oh. My. Gosh. If you had told me I would pick up a full length novel and read it in one sitting I would have laughed. But, yesterday morning I decided to select a new book to read on my Kindle. I chose If I Run by Terri Blackstock. Let me tell you. That book grabbed me from the first line and by late afternoon I had finished this wonderful book.

If I Run is the first book in Terri Blackstock's new series and is due to release on February 16, 2016. I can honestly say that this is a powerful suspense novel that will grab you from the first sentence, "There's blood on the bottom of my shoes." and leave you wanting more by the time you turn the last page. 

The blurb on the back starts out, "Casey knows the truth. But it won't set her free." This is a story about Casey Cox, a young woman who at the tender age of twelve discovered her father's dead body. It was stated that her father committed suicide by hanging but she still doesn't believe it. She knows in her heart that he was murdered. Now she finds her best friend murdered and she decides to flee until she can uncover the truth. She can't trust the police so who can she trust.

Ms. Blackstock has written a fast paced, nail-biting suspense novel that takes the reader on an edge-of-your-seat ride until the very end. I have to say that I was so hooked at wanting to know what was going to happen next that before I knew it I had finished the entire book and now I will have to wait patiently for the second book in the series.

I highly recommend this book for adults who enjoy reading fast paced suspense novels with a Christian thread. Because of the subject content, it might not be suited for young readers.

The Perfect Arrangement by Katie Ganshert

Today I spent a wonderful couple of hours reading the novella, The Perfect Arrangement, by Katie Ganshert. This is the eleventh novella in "A Year of Weddings" novella series.

This is the story of a shy, small-town florist Amelia Woods and ghostwriter Nate Gallagher. They meet totally by 'accident' and go on to strike up a friendship via email. 

I found myself totally involved in this story and at times I laughed and other times I cried. I must admit that there is a character by the name of George that I totally fell in love with. I guarantee you will most likely do the same should you pick up this wonderful book.

I have read several books by Ms Ganshert and have truly loved each and everyone. She has a talent of creating true-to-life characters that still your heart leaving you wanting more.

I do enjoy reading novellas as they are always a quick read, however I sometimes feel I need a little more of the story for it to feel totally complete. I must say that is not the case with The Perfect Arrangement. Ms. Ganshert gave it all to us. However, in this case I do hope she creates a sequel letting the reader know what happens next in all her wonderful character's lives.

I would highly recommend picking up a copy of this wonderful book to anyone who likes to read 'feel-good' stories. On a 5-Star Scale - 5 Stars!!!!!

Whispers in the Reading Room by Shelley Gray

Once again I have discovered an author who is new to me and I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed her work. Shelley Gray's Whispers in the Reading Room is her third book in "The Chicago World's Fair Mystery Series". Since I enjoyed this book so much I hope to go back and read the other two books in the series, Secrets of Sloane House and Deception on Sable Hill.

Whispers in the Reading Room is the story of Lydia Bancroft, a librarian at the Lincoln Lending Library in Chicago, Illinois. Lydia is engaged to Jason but finds herself intrigued with a tall, dark and handsome gentleman who visits the library on a regular basis. The gentleman is Sebastian Marks, a mystery man who speaks nary a word at first. But if Lydia has her way, she will find out more about this mysterious man.

In time, Lydia and Sebastian become friends but there is still a shroud of mystery around Sebastian that Lydia wants to peel away. She hears that he is wealthy and that he is involved in a business in the worst part of town. She still wants to know more but will she be hurt in the process?

Lydia is a great character that by all society's standards should rest in the fact that she is engaged to Jason. After all, since her father's death, she and her mother have become almost penniless and marrying Jason should elevate them back up to society's standards, or will it? 

Lydia just can't curb her curiosity about Sebastian and wants to learn more about the mysterious gentleman. She decides she wants to visit Sebastian's club but soon finds herself a suspect in a murder.She has to decide who she can trust and who Sebastian really is. Is he a wealthy gentleman that people have wrongfully accused of being a man who should be feared or is he truly a gentleman who has been misunderstood?

I loved the mystery surrounding Sebastian and grew to like his character more and more as his past was revealed.

This book is a wonderful historical novel filled with intrigue, mystery and romance. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a historical mystery filled with romance.

How to Catch a Prince by Rachel Hauck

When I read Rachel Hauck's newest book How to Catch a Prince, I fell in love with the story, her character's and her writing. I can't say enough about this delightful angelic book.

Corina Del Rey is an American heiress, who, five and a half years prior to the start of the story, found herself married to Prince Stephen of Brighton. Due to a tragic occurrence during the war in Afghanistan that left Corina's twin brother dead, the Prince pushes her away. She goes back home to Georgia to mourn with her family.

The marriage, which had been kept secret, was thought to be unofficial as they never thought the Archbishop had filed paperwork regarding the marriage. When the Archbishop retired, his replacement found the secret document and filed it with the King's Office. The King confronts his brother Stephan and it is decided he must go to Corina and get her to sign annulment papers. This begins a whirlwind roller coaster ride of ups and downs, highs and lows and an angelic intervention.

I haven't read many books by Ms. Hauck but I truly want to go back now and read her first two books in "The Royal Wedding Series". Once Upon a Prince and Princess Ever After. I truly enjoyed How to Catch a Prince and I imagine the first two books are just as wonderful.

Corina and Prince Stephen were on a journey towards truth, forgiveness, and unforgotten love. With the help of some angelic assistance they take a journey that the reader will find thoroughly enjoyable.

I would highly recommend How to Catch a Prince to anyone who enjoys a good clean contemporary book.

NIV Once-a-Day Bible For Leaders

NIV Once-a-Day Bible for Leaders is a Bible that is broken down into 365 daily readings. Each day you will have a portion of the Old Testament, New Testament and either Psalms or Proverbs. Because it is set up by days, you can easily read through the Bible in one year.

I have had once-a-day Bibles before that are set up by actual dates such as January 1st, November 21st, etc. I have to say I prefer having them simply say, Day 1, Day 325 etc. This way if a person starts the Bible on April 28th, they can begin on Day 1 instead of moving through the Bible to April 28th. Some people probably would still start on January 1 but I'm not one of those people. :)

The one thing that sets this Bible apart from others is it has a section at the end of each day entitled "Reflections". These segments are written by different people within the Christian community. Some I have heard of, in fact, one is the pastor I used to have when I lived in California But there are some others I"m learning from for the first time. The reflections are all very insightful.

I would highly suggest this Bible to anyone looking for a once-a-day Bible even if you aren't in management or a leadership position.

NIV Read Easy Bible

I was excited when I had the opportunity to review the NIV read easy Bible by Zondervan. It was described as a compact Bible with large print and that's exactly what I was looking for. If you have ever picked up a compact Bible you have probably found the print is quite small. That is not the case with this Bible. It's compact with beautiful large print.

This bible comes with an Italian duo-tone cover which appears and smells like leather and the pages are gilded with silver. It comes with a ribbon marker and it is a red letter edition. In the front of the Bible there is a nice presentation page which would be nice if you choose to give this Bible as a gift.

I had my pastor husband use this Bible in church this morning and when I asked him what he thought after the service he told me he like the feel of the Bible and that the compact size and larger print made it so much easier to handle during his sermon. It's a winner!

I would highly recommend this Bible to those people who just want a Bible to take with you in your everyday travels or to use as a witnessing tool. It is not a study Bible and doesn't contain a concordance.

The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson

Since I was a little girl, I have always loved a good fairy tale. Cinderella just happens to be one of my favorites, maybe because I was sometimes called Cinderella when I was younger. So when I had the opportunity to read, and review, The Captive Maiden I jumped at the chance!

Ms. Dickerson has a talent of taking an age-old fairy tale and putting her twist on it creating a masterful retelling.  The Captive Maiden is her retelling of Cinderella and once again she has created a masterpiece.

The two main characters, Gisela and Valten, were well crafted and endeared themselves to my heart.  I truly enjoyed watching their relationship develop over the course of the book. I found myself rooting for them both time and again as they faced each challenge. 

While The Captive Maiden is listed as a young adult novel, I guarantee you, adults will find this book a treat to read. With twists and turns you are held captive from page one until the turning of the last page.  I highly recommend this book to all those readers who love a good fairy tale retelling and a good clean Christian read.

NIV Ragamuffin Bible - with Reflections by Brennan Manning

When given the opportunity to receive and review the NIV Ragamuffin Bible I jumped at the chance.  I love having different translations of the Bible and if they come with devotionals included within the pages all the better.

The Ragamuffin Bible has reflections by Brennan Manning scattered throughout as devotionals.  This particular Bible has the devotionals, or meditations, geared toward the bedraggled, beat-up and brokenhearted. I must admit, some of the devotionals were really quite sad. The one found in James, entitled The Good We Ought to Do, was about a person who witnessed a man being so totally cruel and inhumane to a young pregnant woman by pouring beer over her head and down her blouse while being very graphic with his talk of what he had done to her and was going to do to her later.  I did not find this type of 'devotional' pleasing within the covers of a Bible. I know the point was about what the person who was observing did to try to rescue the woman and to back up James 4:17, "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them", but I found it a little offensive inside the covers of a Bible.  I believe it would serve a better person in a Bible study.

I really don't find that I can recommend this Bible except to the bedraggled, beat-up and brokenhearted.

The Survivor by DiAnn Mills - a review

I was so excited when DiAnn Mills newest book, The Survivor arrived in my mailbox. It is the second book in the 'Crime Scene Houston' series.  You can read my review of the first book in the series, The Chase, here.

The one thing I know when I pick up a suspense book by Ms. Mills is I'm going to be in for an 'edge-of-the-seat.' journey through the pages.  Her stories are all character driven and The Survivor was no different.

For those of you who read The Chase  you'll be happy to know that Kariss Walker and Special Agent Tigo Harris are back again.  Unfortunately, somewhere between the end of The Chase and the beginning of The Survivor they have broken up.  Their break-up was due to Tigo not being a Christian and he never told Kariss he had been married before.

Kariss has been asked to tell the true story of Dr. Amy Garrett's horrific experience when she was a child.  But she wants the story told as fiction.  Amy had been assaulted and her throat was slit and she was left to die.  The killer is still out there....watching and they start sending threats to Kariss.

Tigo and his partner, Ryan Steadman, are following up on a car bombing in which a wife and daughter of a prominent businessman are killed.  Was the bomb meant for the husband instead?  That's what Tigo and Ryan try to figure out.  Along the way it appears that their case is linked with the story Kariss is working on with Dr. Garrett. Tigo and Kariss find themselves embroiled in another heart stopping battle to get the bad guys before something happens to them first.

Ms. Mills is a master storyteller who creates such believable characters they could almost walk right off the written page.  Tigo and Kariss grab you at the start,never let you go and they stay with you long after you turn that final page.

If you like good Christian Suspense, The Survivor, is a book you need to read.  I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Betrayal by Robin Lee Hatcher - my review & 2 book giveaway

I am so very excited to tell you about a new author I discovered.  Well, you all may have read her work before but I was just blessed with reading my first book by Robin Lee Hatcher.  I was given the chance to read and review her book betrayal (little 'b' on purpose), the second book in her "Where the Heart Lives" series and Zondervan blessed me with not only a copy of betrayal, but also the first book in the series, belonging.  Oh, and they were also gracious enough to send me a second copy of each to offer to you, my readers.  Yes, this is a giveaway post!  Yippee!

I read the book, betrayal first as that was the book Zondervan was requesting to be reviewed.  Now I am excited to read the first in the series.

betrayal is the story of widow Julia Grace and drifter Hugh Brennan.  Julia's husband had been abusive to her and she vowed never to love or marry again.  She is left with a ranch to run and taxes to pay.  Hugh Brennan's mother died when he was young and he and his sisters were separated when they were sent to live with different families.  Hugh's father soon finds him and takes him to live with him only to turn him over to a life of crime.  Hugh serves time in prison for a crime he didn't commit and is now trying to find his two sisters.  In his travels, he encounters Julia and he asks if she could use some help on her farm for a few days.  I can't say anything more or it will be a spoiler, which I never try to do.

One thing I loved about this book is the way Ms Hatcher weaves God's Word throughout, whether as a thought or a spoken word.  Well done.  Not overbearing.

Ms. Hatcher has created a beautiful and believable cast of characters that come to life on the written page.  I found myself endeared to Julia and Hugh from the very beginning and Charlie, well, let's just say....I didn't like him at all.  Well done Ms. Hatcher.  Any author who can make me love and hate their characters becomes an author that I will go out of my way to find their books.  

As a side note, in my humble opinion, whoever created the beautiful cover art for betrayal captured the leading male, Hugh Brennan very, very well. 

I would highly recommend betrayal to anyone enjoying a good Christian love story.

Unglued Devotional by Lysa TerKeurst - my review

I am always ready for a good devotional to add to my time spent with the Lord.  When I was given the opportunity to review Lysa TerKeurst's newest book, Unglued Devotional, I was excited as I have enjoyed previous books by Ms. TerKeurst.  Unfortunately, this book of devotions wasn't for me.

The subtitle of the book is "60 Days of Imperfect Progress" and I felt the stories were leaning a little to the 'negative'.  I always try to select an uplifting devotional but Unglued Devotional didn't feel very uplifting to me.  But I feel that is most likely because I didn't really connect with some of the topics.  

I do believe the purpose of the book is to help the reader take situations that 'unglue' them and turn them around to a positive experience.  I think if the book had been grouped in sections that pertained to different issues, it might be more helpful to the reader.  

One thing I did like is the Appendix that helps the reader determine their reaction type.  

I would recommend this devotional to those who experience a lot of 'unglued' days.

The Chase by DiAnn Mills - a review

The Chase, by DiAnn Mills is Christian Suspense at it's finest. This is the first book in the Crime Scene Houston Series and if the rest of the series is anything like The Chase, Ms. Mills will have a hit series on her hands.

This book is drawn from a real-life cold case and Ms. Mills brings the story to life with her passion for the real tragic event. Just as Ms. Mills wanted to tell the story, her heroine, Kariss Walker is passionate about telling the story within the book.  

Kariss Walker is a former TV news anchor that is now a New York Times bestselling author.  While working as a news anchor she reported on a case where an unidentified little girl is found starved to death in the woods.  The little girl becomes known as Cherished Doe.  Kariss hasn't been able to let go of the story and after writing women's fiction for several years she wants to write a novel about Cherished Doe in hopes that it can help solve the case.

When Kariss approaches her agent about changing genre and writing a suspense novel, her agent begs her not too and soon drops her as a client.  Kariss is determined and contacts an old friend with the FBI.  He pairs her up with his top agent, Special Agent Tigo Harris.  Tigo is not too happy about the match up and in time sparks are flying.  

With the help of Tigo, the Cherished Doe case is reopened and Tigo and Kariss work together to try to determine exactly what happened.  During this time Tigo is also working undercover to try to break up a gun running cartel.  Could the cases be connected.  Are they able to bring a solution to Cherished Doe's death.  All these answers are within the covers of this wonderful book.

If I have anything negative to say about The Chase, its the lack of romance.  Sure, sparks fly between Tigo and Kariss and they think to themselves that they are having feelings for each other but they never really 'get there' before the book ends.  There is a Chapter One of the second book in the series tucked in at the back of the book and Tigo and Kariss will be brought back.  My hopes are that they will finally express their love for each other somewhere within the pages of Book 2 (no name listed).

I would highly recommend this book for mature audiences only based on content.

Heart of Glass by Jill Marie Landis - a review

Heart of Glass by Jill Marie Landis is the third book in her Irish Angel Series.  I have read all three books in the series and have loved them all.  If you would like to read my review for the second book, Heart of Lies, please go here.

This is Kate Keene's story.  She is the one of four sisters that at an early age were separated from each other.  Kate ended up in an orphanage and was adopted by a couple who adopted her merely for status in the community.  Kate, at an early age, befriended Amelie Delaney and was more or less part of the Delaney family.  Then the Civil War happened and life as she knew it changed.

The story is set in Louisiana and Chapter One begins in 1976 when Kate returns to the Delaney's plantation home Belle Fleuve.  She has heard that Colin Delaney, her best friend's brother and her childhood crush, has returned to Belle Fleuve, and he has gone crazy.  What she finds breaks her heart.  What was once a beautiful plantation home is now in disrepair and Colin is living on laudanum due to a wound he sustained in the Indian Wars in Texas. But Kate sees hope as she is an architect and in no time at all she feels she can restore Belle Fleuve, as well as, Colin.

So begins the story of Kate and Colin.  The story was well told and the characters were so well written that they came to life for me.  Ms. Landis does have a way of writing characters that are so real they invite you into their world and you become part of the story.

I will suggest that that you have a box of tissues handy.  I shed more tears in this book then I think I have ever shed in any other book.  When a book can make me emotional, it is a good book.

If I were to say anything negative about Heart of Glass, it's that Kate's sisters don't show up until the very end.  I felt cheated on their reunion.  I do hope though that there will be a fourth book to tell the youngest sister, Sarah's story.  Maybe then there will be a wonderful full reunion for all four sisters.

If you like to read good Christian love stories I would highly recommend Heart of Glass, as well as, Heart of Stone and Heart of Lies.

The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson - a review

The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson, is a retelling of the story Beauty and the Beast.  In this story Annabel is the daughter of a once wealthy merchant.  The story begins after Annabel's father has passed away and she, along with her mother and two brothers are being held accountable for not doing their fair share to help the community of Glynval.  It has been determined, by the town, that in order to pay their debt, one of the family must become an indentured servant to the new lord, Ranulf le Wyse, for three years.  It is rumored that the new lord is terrifying and beastly.  In the meantime, one of her brothers has decided she should marry the local Bailiff, an old friend of her father's who has promised to pay their debt to the town for Annabel's hand in marriage.  Annabel decides that she will be the one to become an indentured servant to the new lord as it would be more pleasant than marrying the likes of Bailiff Tom.  She dreams of the day her servant-hood is completed and she can move to a nunnery where she can spend her days reading the Holy Writ.

This sets the story for Annabel and Lord Ranulf le Wyse.  What ensues is a sweet love story along with some mystery and danger thrown into the mix.  I found Ms. Dickerson's retailing of the story of Beauty and the Beast quite sweet and enjoyable.  Annabel and Lord Ranulf le Wyse were characters that were quite believable and endearing to the reader.

I haven't really read many books set during the time period of the 14th century, basically, because it was never my period of choice.  I picked up The Merchant's Daughter simply because I heard it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, my favorite all time fairy tale.  I must say I have a new appreciation of books set in this time period and I may just have to pick up another book down the road.

I would definitely recommend The Merchant's Daughter to anyone wanting a good Christian book offering a sweet love story with some intrigue thrown in.
