This week, the
is introducing
River North (March 1, 2015)
by

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jocelyn Green is a child of God, wife and mom living in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She is also an award-winning journalist, author, editor and blogger. Though she has written nonfiction on a variety of topics, her name is most widely recognized for her ministry to military wives: Faith Deployed. Her passion for the military family was fueled by her own experience as a military wife, and by the dozens of interviews she has conducted with members of the military for her articles and books, Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives and its sequel, Faith Deployed...Again: More Daily Encouragement for Military Wives. She is also co-author of both Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq & Afghanistan and Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front (forthcoming, May 2012). Her Faith Deployed Web site and Facebook page continue to provide ongoing support, encouragement and resources for military wives worldwide.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Trust none. Risk all.
Richmond, Virginia, 1863. Compelled to atone for the sins of her slaveholding father, Union loyalist Sophie Kent risks everything to help end the war from within the Confederate capital and abolish slavery forever. But she can't do it alone.
Former slave Bella Jamison sacrifices her freedom to come to Richmond, where her Union soldier husband is imprisoned, and her twin sister still lives in bondage in Sophie's home. Though it may cost them their lives, they work with Sophie to betray Rebel authorities. Harrison Caldwell, a Northern freelance journalist who escorts Bella to Richmond, infiltrates the War Department as a clerk-but is conscripted to defend the city's fortifications.

As Sophie's spy network grows, she walks a tightrope of deception, using her father's position as newspaper editor and a suitor's position in the ordnance bureau for the advantage of the Union. One misstep could land her in prison, or worse. Suspicion hounds her until she barely even trusts herself. When her espionage endangers the people she loves, she makes a life-and-death gamble.

Will she follow her convictions even though it costs her everything-and everyone-she holds dear?

My Thoughts:

When a series is good, I always hate to say good-bye. Spy of Richmond is the fourth and final book in Jocelyn Green's "Heroes Behind the Lines" Civil War series. In my opinion, it is the best in the series.

I truly appreciate Ms. Green's strong and well developed characters. They are faced with decisions that could put their lives in danger as well as endangering the lives of their loved ones but they press on. Ms. Green allows the reader to feel the emotions along with the character instead of just telling the reader what the character is feeling. The reader is drawn in and becomes one with the story. Masterful job Ms. Green.

Spy of Richmond is based on the spy rings that were prevalent in Richmond during the Civil War. Sophie Kent, the heroine, creates a spy network knowing that one error could land her in prison and could result in her death. But she has a heart for the Union and a strong desire to see slavery abolished and that is what spurs her on to help the Union even though she live in Confederate territory. It is obvious, in all four books, that Ms. Green has done her research as all four books are packed with historical fact.

I was pulled into the story from the very beginning and stayed engaged until I turned the very last page. Job well done Ms. Green!

I would highly recommend Spy of Richmond to anyone who loves reading a good clean historical novel.

I would like to thank Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and River North for my copy of Spy of Richmond. I received my copy for free in order to read it and give my honest review.

The Turning by Davis Bunn - a review with Giveaway!

The Turning by Davis Bunn is the story of five people who, while they are all quite different and from different walks of life, have something in common. They all hear God's voice and are brought together in New York City for a purpose. But first they must all deal with issues in each of their lives.

This story takes place over a period of twelve days. All the characters were likable in their own way, except maybe the villain Trent Cooper. As the story progresses each character is required to make sacrifices while surrendering to God's will. The task they find themselves up against seems impossible. Will they succeed?

The characters were hard for me to connect with. I didn't like Trent Cooper at all. The others, John, Alisha, Jenny, Yussuf and Ruth were okay but they didn't seem real to me. They were from all different walks of life coming together in accordance to God's will. What I did like is that the reader is made aware that God is still speaking today and will talk to anyone. We just need to listen.

To me, the story was a little dark and I had a hard time really getting into it, probably more because it wasn't the type of genre I usually read. In fact, it is considered devotional fiction and it has a supplementary 40 Day online devotional to go along with the book. You can access this and other online resources here. While I wasn't a big fan, I am sure there will be many who love this book.

On a 5-Star scale = 3 1/2 stars.

CFBA - Yankee in Atlanta by Jocelyn Green

Jocelyn Green is a child of God, wife and mom living in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She is also an award-winning journalist, author, editor and blogger. ABOUT THE BOOK

When soldier Caitlin McKae woke up in Atlanta after being wounded in battle, the Georgian doctor who treated her believed Caitlin's only secret was that she had been fighting for the Confederacy disguised as a man. In order to avoid arrest or worse, Caitlin hides her true identity and makes a new life for herself in Atlanta.
Trained as a teacher, she accepts a job as a governess to the daughter of Noah Becker, a German immigrant lawyer, who is about to enlist with the Rebel army. Then in the spring of 1864, Sherman's troops edge closer to Atlanta. Caitlin tries to escape north with the girl, but is arrested on charges of being a spy. Will honor dictate that Caitlin follow the rules, or love demand that she break them?

Id you would like to read the first chapter of Yankee in Atlanta, go HERE.

My Thoughts:

As a fan of Civil War novels I couldn't pass up the chance to read Yankee in Atlanta by Jocelyn Green. This it the third book in Ms. Green's series, "Heroines Behind the Lines". I haven't read the first two books in the series yet, Wedded to War and Widow of Gettysburg but I definitely plan on reading them in the near future. I also look forward to her next release in the series, Spy of Richmond.

The book begins with a Prologue in which the reader finds themselves transported to the battlefield in the thick of fighting. Ms. Green draws the reader in from the first page and you find yourself held captive until the last page is turned. I always love books that pull the reader in, holds them hostage and doesn't release them until long after the book has been finished.

This novel tells the story of two families, one northern and the other southern. Caitlin McKae, while having Irish roots, has joined the Northerners fight by disguising herself as a man. When she is wounded, she encounters a Confederate who is dying. He hands her his Rebel Bible asking her to read the 23rd Psalm to him. He also tells her to use his jacket to tie off her wounded arm. She soon loses conscientiousness and when she awakes she learns that the enemy knows she is female. One man accuses her of being a spy but she swears she is not. Will she succeed in concealing who she is until the war is over?

Ruby O'Flannery is the northerner who is fighting her own battles while trying to raise her young son.  Will she be able to succeed in fighting her battles?

Noah Becker is a German immigrant who is ready to head off to fight for the Confederacy but he must first find someone to watch over his young daughter, Ana. He soon hires Caitlin as Ana's governess. Caitlin finds herself challenged, not only posing as a southerner but also in finding ways to keep her and Ana fed and safe.

This is a book that one must spend time with. It's not light reading and isn't meant to be. After all, it is set against one of the darkest times in American history. It isn't a book for the faint at heart either. It is, however, rich in history and characters that make you believe they are real. If you enjoy authentic historical novels, I would highly suggest you pick up a copy of Yankee in Atlanta. You won't be sorry.

On a 5-Star Scale - 4 Stars!!!!

Shades of Mercy by Anita Lustrea & Caryn Rivadeneira - Review with 3 Books to Give away

Shades of Mercy by Anita Lustrea and Caryn Rivadeneira is a coming of age story set in Northern Maine in the year 1954. It is a story filled with young love, sadness, happiness, racial tension and many other feelings that the authors stir up within the reader.

The story begins in what the reader can only presume is modern day. Mercy's granddaughter, Laurel, is on her way to New York to see her.  But mostly she wants to see New York the way her grandfather knew New York before he passed away.  Mercy thinks to herself that it would be better to take her to Maine where Laurel's grandfather came to be the man that he was. Knowing they don't have the time to do that, Mercy decides to tell Laurel their story. The story of 15 year old Mercy and 16 year old Mick, a Maliseet Indian. The story of their forbidden love. And that is where the real story begins.

Mercy and Mick are always talking about "someday". Someday, Mercy's dad will finally realize she isn't the son he never had but a young beautiful daughter. Someday, Mercy and Mick can finally be together without hiding their relationship. Someday, they will leave Maine and see more of the world. Will their someday come?

One thing I enjoy when I read historical novels is when I can learn something. In Shades of Mercy the reader learns of the prejudices people of Maine had against the Maliseet tribe. It's really sad that because their skin was a different color they were made to live in a garbage dump. Yes, you read that right. They lived in the Flats which were nothing more than shacks built over the dump. My heart went out to them. Reading about them made me want to find out more about the tribe to find out how things got better for them.

The authors of Shades of Mercy are new to me. At first, I didn't know whether I would enjoy reading a book in first person, but I found that the character of Mercy pulled me in and made me feel as if I was right there with her. I grew to love the character of Mercy.  I grew to love Mick as well and found myself continually rooting for them. I wanted them together. I wanted their world to change for the better.

Shades of Mercy  is a heartwarming story of young love during a time of racial prejudice. It is a story that shows the real meaning of grace. It also shows the ugly side of racism. It is filled with love, friendship and hope. All in all this book touched me deeply.

I would highly recommend Shades of Mercy to anyone who enjoys reading historical novels. Be prepared though as the authors did an excellent job of showing us what it must have been like in Northern Maine during this time in our Nation's history.

On a 5-Star Scale - 4 Stars!!!!

I would like to thank the publishers River North, a division of Moody Publishers for my copy of Shades of Mercy. I received my copy for free in order to read it and give my honest review, which I have done.
