A Fragile Hope by Cynthia Ruchti

It was really hard for me to read Cynthia Ruchti's book A Fragile Hope, not because there was anything wrong with the book (believe me, this is an excellent read), but because a great part of the book takes place in an emergency room and hospital. I was reading it as I sat in the emergency room with my mom and later in the hospital with her before she passed.

A Fragile Hope is a story about communication and how when it isn't handled properly, people get hurt and look for ways to escape. It is a story of misunderstandings, forgiveness and most importantly, hope. 

This is the story of Josiah Chamberlain, a relationship expert and his wife, Karin who runs her own business. Ms. Ruchti takes the reader on a journey along with Josiah to discover who he really is and what he can do to rectify the issues he is forced to face. 

I highly recommend this book but I will say that you may need some tissues handy as you read it. I know I did. Ms Ruchti touched my heart deeply with this book and I so appreciate being given the opportunity to read it.

Medical Judgment by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.

I am a big fan of Dr. Richard Mabry's work and when I am given the opportunity to read and review any of his books, I jump at the chance. His newest book is Medical Judgment and it is another great story by this author.D

My Thoughts:

I love a good suspense and Dr. Mabry hands the reader exactly that in his newest novel, Medical Judgment. His heroine, Dr. Sarah Gordon won me over from the start as the grieving widow mourning the loss of her husband and baby daughter. Then to have someone stalking her every movement, my heart truly went out to her. She was a very well crafted strong female character that I truly enjoyed.

Kyle Andrews, was a character I just never grew to like. There seemed to be a shady side to him that just made me cringe when he tried to gain Sarah's attention.

Detective Bill Larson was a character I truly grew to like, however, not for Sarah. He had too much baggage and Sarah had enough of her own.

The question is, does Kyle or Bill win Sarah's heart or could someone else step in and steal her heart. Does the stalker get caught and if so, just who could want to harm someone who is already hurting so much. All of these questions are answered in this wonderful new suspense filled novel.

Dr. Mabry's characters in this book were all very strong and drew out strong emotions from me as I read it. Well done Dr. Mabry. I love good characterization.

As far as the stalker, I had really hoped I wouldn't figure it out until the "unveiling moment", however, with several tidbits tossed in throughout the book I figured who the stalker was about midway into the book. But that is okay because I didn't know the reason behind their actions.

For anyone who loves a good suspense novel, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of Medical Judgment. You won't be disappointed.

Miracle Drug by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.

I love a good Medical Thriller and when Dr. Richard Mabry's name is on the cover I know I will be in for a wonderful edge-of-my-seat read. Dr. Mabry's newest book, Miracle Drug, kept me turning pages long into the night and I wasn't disappointed.

What would you do if you had a mysterious event happen and found yourself doused with an unknown substance? Then days later you start showing systems of diphtheria only to find out later there is an underlying disease and possibly no cure. That is the basis of Miracle Drug.

While in South America, two people are infected with a deadly disease, the former president of the United States, David Madison, and nurse Rachel Moore. Upon arriving home, Dr. Josh Pearson, finds himself the newly appointed physician to the former president. When he learns there is an experimental drug that may save the life of the former president and Ms. Moore he finds himself in a quandary as there may only be enough of the 'miracle drug' to save one life. Should he give all the drug to the former president or give it to Ms. Moore who happens to be his girlfriend?

Dr. Mabry has created one of his best books yet. The twists and turns he spread throughout the book caused me to keep guessing until the very end. It is definitely a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I would highly recommend Miracle Drug to anyone who enjoys a good medical thriller or any suspenseful novel.

Fatal Trauma by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.

I have quickly learned that when I pick up a book with Dr. Richard Mabry's name on the cover, I'm going to be in for a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat, can't put it down read. His newest book, Fatal Trauma, in my humble opinion, is his best.

Fatal Trauma begins when a gunman enters the ER  holding Nurse Kelly Atkinson at gunpoint as she pushes the gunman's brother into the ER in a wheelchair. The first thing Dr. Mark Baker thinks about is how to escape the area without being drawn into the situation. Unfortunately, the gunman notices Mark and asks if he is the doctor. This begins one of the most heart pounding book beginnings that I have read in a long time.  

The gunman is part of the Zeta drug cartel and by the end of the evening two of the cartel's members are dead and revenge is just around the corner. When the drug cartel begins their reign of retaliation, people are stalked, murdered, malpractice lawsuits are threatened and the twists and turns takes the reader on a wild trip in this wonderful new medical drama.

I have read all of Dr. Mabry's novels and I find with each book his talent for the craft of writing has grown. His characters seem real enough to walk off the page and into your world. I found that in Fatal Trauma I was rooting for Dr. Mark Baker as he reminded me of a doctor I once worked with in the operating room. 

If you are a fan of medical suspense novels, then do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Fatal Trauma. I guarantee you that it will be well worth your time. With drug cartels, murders, stalking, false accusation, and a little romance it will keep you so entertained that you will lose track of time.

My Thoughts:

Rival Hearts was a fun read from beginning to end.  The two lead characters are head strong and willing to do almost anything to get what they want. Molly Henderson is the editor of Quilter's Heart magazine and Ben Weaver is the editor of Outdoor Adventures magazine. Both magazines are owned by Master's Publishing.  The owner, Mr. Blake Masterson has decided he wants to debut a brand new magazine entitled American Legend. Mr. Masterson is known for doing some strange gimmicks to promote his magazines and he has come up with a way to select the Editor-in-Chief of the new magazine.  He decides to have Ben do a project for Quilter's Heart magazine and Molly must do a project for Outdoor Adventures magazine. It was a wild ride...

When the story first began, I didn't like Ben very much. I thought he was an egotistical jock who thought he was better than everyone else, including Molly. Boy, was I wrong. Molly came off as a wallflower in the beginning and the two seemed very mismatched. But as the shells of these two wonderful characters started to peal away what was left was a beautiful relationship between two lovable characters.

I won't tell you who won because that would ruin it for you, but I do suggest that you pick up a copy because I am sure you will love it.

My Thoughts:

I am a big fan of the Quilts of Love series published through Abingdon Press. I have read quite a few of them and have loved all but a couple of them. Unfortunately, I didn't love Eva Gibson's contribution to the series, A Stitch and a Prayer. I believe I would have loved it had I connected to her character's more. 

I tried to really connect with Florence and Will but it never happened. I think it's because I wondered how a husband could go off and leave his frail pregnant bride alone without at least telling her why he was going away. To just promise he would return didn't seem enough. After all,  the late 1800's  were hard and to force a young mother to be alone, well it bothered me. I guess things like that happened, but to keep a secret in the beginning of their marriage was hard for me to understand or agree with.

One thing I did enjoy about this book is that the quilt Florence worked on was the Tree of Life pattern.  This is a pattern very dear to me as my grandmother, before she died, quilted a pillow with the Tree of Life on it and gave it to me. it's beautiful.

I am the author of seven novels. Five adult novels and two middle grade readers. I never wanted to do anything else but write and every day I wake up astonished that I get to do what I always dreamed about. My days are filled with words and images along with the usual family stuff. I have three children, Rebekah who is married to Joshua. They have three of the most adorable boys on the planet, Lemuel, Cedar and Soren. My daughter Emily Kate is a lovely young woman anthropologist and my son Adam is fourteen and a student--he's a genius who loves frogs and lizards and fish and plants. He amazes me.

I have never eaten a scallop. I love cream soda. Drink way too much coffee. I do not like elevators but I do enjoy needle arts and of course books. I prefer jazz over country (no offense), milk chocolate over dark, but not roller coasters although my life has often resembled a roller coaster ride.

One of my life's desires is to meet Amy Grant so I can tell her she saved my life.

My Thoughts:

I've enjoyed all the "Quilts of Love" books that I've read so far, however, Maybelle in Stitches was not one of my favorites. I found it difficult for me to connect with the characters because they didn't come to life for me.

There was a lot of sadness in this book, first when Maybelle's mother passes away and then again when Maybelle's husband, Holden, is listed as Missing in Action while fighting the Nazis. Probably the saddest part for me was the end. It was bittersweet.

I did however enjoy the women who came together to help Maybelle finish the quilt her mother had started.

My Thoughts:
I have grown quite fond of the "Quilts of Love" series and found the newest release, Scraps of Evidence a book that I devoured and thoroughly enjoyed. 

This was my first experience in reading any of the author's work but I was quite impressed. I enjoyed her characters Tess and Logan and how she allowed their relationship to blossom during the course of the investigation. They were believable and endeared themselves to me. 

The investigation involves an old unsolved murder of Tess's childhood friend, Samantha, and new murders that are believed to be done by the same person. I will say I had an idea who the serial killer was and all I could think every time he was in a scene, is "you Scumbag"! Ms. Cameron wrote the serial killer's character well enough to have the reader despise him.

I would highly recommend Scraps of Evidence to anyone who enjoys a good clean 'who-dunnit'!

My Thoughts:

I have become a big fan of the "Quilts of Love" Series of books. When given the opportunity to review Tempest's Course I jumped at the chance.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the way Ms. Sowell incorporated the journal of Mary Gray that was written in the 1850's. I have always enjoyed reading books that tie the past to the present.

Ms. Sowell created believable characters that endeared themselves to this reader.  I didn't see the ending coming but that's what makes reading so enjoyable, the surprises that an author drops when you least expect it.  I don't believe I have read anything by Lynette Sowell in the past but I will definitely be looking for her books in the future.

Severed Trust by Margaret Daley - my review

Severed Trust is Margaret Daley's fourth book in her "The Men of the Texas Rangers" series. Having already read the other three books in the series, Saving Hope, Shattered Silence and Scorned Justice, I just had to read her newest offering in the series. I wasn't disappointed.

Ms. Daley always creates believable characters that work their way into the heart of the reader. In Severed Trust, school teacher Sadie Thompson and Texas Ranger, Ethan Stone bring to life a story about teenagers, pill parties and prescription drugs. A death occurs, is it suicide or murder? That is what drives the story forward.

The scary thing is pill parties are happening around the country in the real world today. Parents should read this book so they can get an idea of what could be happening in their children's school. A pill party is where kids steal prescription pills from parents, or wherever they can find them, go to a party where all the pills are tossed in a bowl and then along with drinking alcohol they grab handfuls of pills and down them. Scary huh?! They can be taking a deadly combination and in this book that's exactly what happens when a young high school football player takes a wrong combination and is found dead. But was it from the pills or was something else at play that caused the death. Ms. Daley puts the reader on the edge of their seat as she takes them on a journey with many twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out something else happened to take me to another conclusion. I love books that can make me feel as if I am part of the story and keep me interested until the very last page.

I am a really big fan of Margaret Daley's work and I have loved each and every book in "The Men of the Texas Rangers" series. They are all stand-alone books so you needn't worry that you have to read them in order. but I highly recommend that you read each one of them as they are all very good.

MY THOUGHTS:

Raw Edges is a touching story of loves lost and loves found all due to the devastating disease of ovarian cancer.  The memorial quilt created in this novel is something quite precious and I found myself thinking, 'wow. maybe I could bid on it'. Then I came back to reality and remembered it was only up for auction in the novel. 

Ms. Bricker does an outstanding job in depicting the pain and anguish of losing someone to cancer and also the pain and anguish of recovery from cancer. Her characters were real and the pain of losing someone was real. I know first hand how devastating cancer can be as I have lost six family members to the disease and have one breast cancer survivor in my family.

What I loved most about this book was the character of Sadie, the nine-year-old going on thirty year old daughter of the male lead, Gray McDonough. She is a precocious young lady who has taken on the role of looking out for her daddy. I also loved the journal that Gray's wife Jenna wrote to Sadie during her journey and battle with ovarian cancer. I laughed and cried but loved the teaching that the journal presented to Sadie but also to the reader as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a good clean contemporary novel and more importantly to anyone whose life has been changed due to cancer.

Scorned Justice by Margaret Daley - a must read!

I am an avid reader of Margaret Daley's work. The reason? She creates wonderful believable characters that pull me into their story and make me feel as if I'm living in their world.  Scorned Justice, the third book in The Men of the Texas Rangers series did exactly that. I know that if Margaret's name is on the cover I am in for an exciting ride.

Scorned Justice is the story of Texas Ranger Brody Calhoun and District Court Judge Rebecca Morgan. Brody and Rebecca grew up together and just when Brody found himself falling in love with her she married another man.  Now, ten years later, she is a widow who is sitting as a judge on a high profile case. When Rebecca's brother Thomas is severely injured in what appears to be an accident, Brody is called in to investigate. As Brody begins to add up all the pieces of evidence he comes to the realization that his best friend Thomas was not injured by accident and that Rebecca is in danger. Brody and Rebecca find themselves drawn to each other once again but Rebecca has already lost one husband in the line of duty and doesn't want to go through that experience again.  Can Brody change her mind?

Set in the town of Dry Gulch near San Antonio Texas, Scorned Justice is a romantic suspense novel that takes the reader on an exciting roller coaster ride.  The Russian Mafia, the Dos Huesos Cruzados Gang, cattle rustling, a deep-rooted vendetta are all found within the covers of this exciting third book of the series. Can Rebecca let the walls down around her guarded heart and take a chance on Brody? Can their faith sustain them through the tragedies they find happening all around them? You will have to read the book to find out as I don't believe in handing out spoilers.

Margaret Daley has a way with creating romantic suspense that pulls the reader into the story and holds them their until the very last page has been turned.  Her characters are well developed and believable. Of all three books in the series, Scorned Justice, in my humble opinion, is the best one yet.  When reading a suspense novel I can usually figure out who did the crime (maybe not until close to the end) but I will admit, Ms. Daley took me on such a wonderful ride that when all was revealed I was totally taken aback.  I didn't see the ending coming.  Magnificently done!

On a 5-Star scale = 5 HUGE stars!!!!!  This was my best read this year!

I would highly recommend this book to adults who enjoy a good Christian Romantic Suspense novel. Due to some 'mild' graphic detail a couple of times in the book, I would not suggest this to the younger reader.
